Confucius Institute at Egerton University receives new Director
Confucius Institute at Egerton University held a special day on 1st February 2016 to receive its new Director, Prof. Muhammed who takes over from Dr. Wolukahu. This special day was also used to welcome students that wish to join Chinese language classes. The meeting was held at the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS) language lab. The lab was full to the brim, with students and staff members who were interested to learn more about what Confucius Institute has to offer.
Among the presenters who spoke of the events, students gave their experience with Chinese culture and traditions. The students reported their experiences in Chinese dance, Taiqi, table tennis, badminton and songs. Additionally, a student gave his experience when he attended a 6 month Chinese language scholarship.
Prof Muhammed informed the students that ten years ago, he had to travel to China to learn Chinese, which he learnt for seven years. Now, since 2013, anyone can learn Chinese here in Kenya. Prof. Muhammed's experience was that after seven months of studying Chinese, he could communicate in Chinese with other Africans who initially didn't understand neither English nor French, but through the Chinese language, they could make first time conversation.
He encouraged the students that Africa needs China, as communicating in Chinese will open opportunities where a person can access nearly 2 billion people who can speak Chinese
He then invited all students to the celebration of the Chinese New Year on 5thn February.
Ultimately, we were all informed on the scholarship opportunities that are on offer; 6 months or 1 year scholarship to China to learn the Chinese language.
The meeting ended with the invitation of students to register for Chinese language classes and encouraging them to participate in dance, songs and culture to help them
understand more about the Chinese and their way of living.
